galligaskins: Baggy trousers worn by sailors of the seventeeth and eighteenth centuries. A fanciful corruption of the French garguesque, "in the Greek style." Galligaskins were not always spoken of in polite conversation. The first recorded substitute for them was inexpressibles in 1790, which led to the emergence of euphemisms such as unmentionables, unutterables, and unwhisperables
